Greens Leader Calls for Stronger Environmental Laws, NFF Lobbies on Super Tax
Larissa Waters, the leader of the Greens of Australia, is urging the Labor government to demonstrate genuine commitment to environmental protection during its planned overhaul of national environmental laws. Waters voiced concerns that the 18-month timeline for the rewrite could be used to greenlight new fossil fuel projects and allow ongoing habitat destruction.
Waters emphasized the need for a comprehensive redesign of the existing regulations, which she argued were originally designed to prioritize development over environmental preservation. She highlighted the absence of climate considerations in the current laws as a critical deficiency.
Specifically, Waters called for a halt to approvals for new mines, citing the extension of Woodside's North West Shelf project as a significant threat. She questioned whether the government truly prioritizes environmental reform, suggesting the extended timeline could be a smokescreen for business as usual.
The Greens leader stressed that the party will use its position in the Senate to push for robust environmental protections during the legislative process.
Meanwhile, the National Farmers' Federation (NFF) is lobbying the Greens regarding Labor's proposed changes to superannuation tax concessions. The NFF fears the changes could negatively impact family farming businesses that rely on superannuation for succession planning.
The NFF has urged the Greens to advocate for amendments to the tax proposal, including grandfathering existing arrangements and excluding agricultural land from valuations.
Waters acknowledged the NFF's concerns and stated that the Greens will carefully consider Labor's proposal. She affirmed the party's commitment to tax reforms that promote fairness and indicated that discussions with Treasurer Jim Chalmers are ongoing.
